Sew She Can is a nonprofit that believes in the power of hands-on creativity to transform lives. We create safe, welcoming spaces where women—especially immigrants, refugees, domestic abuse survivors, and those in life transitions—can rebuild their confidence, learn industry-relevant sewing skills, and imagine new futures.
We know that healing doesn't always happen in a straight line. That’s why we offer more than just sewing instruction. Our programs blend textile arts with mentorship, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial tools—so that each woman can grow at her own pace, in her own direction.
When our founder, Shweta 'Cricket' Green, moved to Spokane, she noticed something missing. While quilting had a strong local following, there were few—if any—accessible avenues for learning sewing, fashion design, or garment construction. Even local colleges and trade schools didn’t offer sewing or apparel-related programs.
What she did find were bridal alteration jobs offering minimum wage and two local manufacturing companies with limited roles. There were few options for people passionate about sewing to turn their skills into careers—or even explore the craft at all.
While searching for seamstresses, Shweta connected with local refugee organizations. That spark of connection—and a shared need—became the seed for Sew She Can.
We are working toward a future where Spokane becomes a hub for ethically made, locally produced clothing—a place where craftsmanship is honored, living wages are standard, and creative women have the tools and support to thrive.
Our dream is to establish a small-batch manufacturing studio that practices:
Because when women have access to skills, community, and opportunity, they don’t just sew garments—they stitch powerful new futures for themselves and their families.
What started as simple sewing lessons soon evolved into something much greater. At Sew She Can, we offer:
But more than that, we offer dignity, encouragement, and belonging—thread by thread.
